(We’ve learned the Century series will stop being manufactured at the end of 2021.) But according to a few customer reviews on Traeger’s website, these grills are prone to malfunction, and their metal parts can warp. The Century Series 22 and 34 models have the control panel with a temperature dial and a small display. If the new SmokePro DLX blows our socks off, we’ll definitely test the sear box accessory for an update. You end up with the best of both worlds-smoky meat with a dark seared crust. Imagine cooking a tomahawk ribeye, low and slow, to your desired temperature in the pellet grill so it gets the smoky flavor, and then cranking up the side box (which uses propane) and reverse-searing those Flintstones steaks. Although we didn’t test this accessory, we do like that it solves one of the shortcomings of pellet grills-they don’t sear. We liked the ability to modify the SmokePro DLX with an additional-cost sear box that attaches to the side.

This was the least-expensive pellet grill we tested, and it felt cheaper overall than both the Traeger Pro 575 and the Green Mountain Grills Daniel Boone. The control panel lets you choose from only nine set temperatures. Not a big deal for pork shoulders, but the brisket we cooked on the Smoke Pro DLX was noticeably tougher than the other two. During our tests, the temperature spiked to 75 degrees above the set temperature.A clean probe helps the thermostat maintain accurate temperatures. Wipe the soot (or creosote) from the thermostat probe with a damp towel. But hey, if you’ve always wanted a shop vac, it’s a great excuse to buy one, amirite? It worked fine, though I wouldn’t recommend people use such a thing for regular ash removal. We didn’t have a shop vac and used a household handheld vac. You can also vacuum out the ash, but again, do so only when the grill is 100% cold and there’s no possible chance of lingering embers.Traeger suggests using “a small metal fireplace shovel or other similar tool” (something like this shovel should work just fine) and disposing of ashes in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. You should clean out the ash only when the grill is completely cool. Too much ash collected in the firebox can keep pellets from igniting and, in some cases, redirect the smoke backward and up through the pellet hopper. Clean out the ash that accumulates in the fire pot and the bottom of the firebox. But you don’t need to stress about a clogged grease chute if you keep your drip pan clean in the first place. Make sure the chute is unobstructed so grease can flow from the pan to the bucket-if the chute gets clogged, you run the risk of a grease fire. Inspect the grease chute between the grease-collection pan and the bucket that hangs off the side of the grill.

It’s easiest to clean the grease pan while the grill is still warm (not hot), so protect your hands with gloves or towels. Then scrub it with hot soapy water and a scour sponge before rinsing and drying. But if you forget to do that part-like I did-you can remove the drip pan and scrape off most of the fat and gunk with a putty knife.

The simplest solution: Line your drip pan with heavy-duty aluminum foil so you can easily discard the greasy mess after you cook. Fat accumulation can lead to grease fires, and those aren’t fun.

If you want to save $100, and you don’t care about the extra features on the Prime Plus model (thicker grates, interior light, collapsible front shelf), you might want to snap up the Prime model before it’s gone for good. Our former runner-up pick, the Green Mountain Grills Daniel Boone Prime pellet smoker, is still available until stock runs out.

The Daniel Boone Prime also burned through a hopper full of pellets the fastest of all the pellet grills we tested-a necessary trade-off if you want smokier barbecue. We experienced slightly more dramatic temperature spikes with the Daniel Boone Prime than with the Pro 575, but that’s something you’ll likely be able to regulate as you get to know your grill. In our previous tests, the Daniel Boone Prime produced a lot of smoke, which made for the darkest and smokiest-tasting brisket and pork shoulders. We tested the Daniel Boone Prime, our former runner-up pick, and the Prime Plus is nearly identical and should perform the same, though it has some minor upgrades: thicker gauge grates, a light in the smoking chamber, a collapsible front shelf, and a redesigned power cord. The Green Mountain Grills Daniel Boone Prime Plus is an excellent pellet grill in its own right.
